So Jeff Lemire and Dustin Nguyen are both top tier at their craft. This book is no exception to that statement. Lemire builds these characters and gives them voices that I feel like I can hear in real life. At the same time, I find all of the characters incredibly conflicting - and that makes for a good story. I don't come across a lot of stories where there is so much ambiguity in regards to who is good and who isn't. Very masterful character building and storytelling by Lemire, as we have all come to expect. Nguyen is awesome, I really love all his work and I can appreciate what he does here, and love the Tim Sale-esque use of color, where the spots of red are used to draw your attention. That being said, I think the colors are my favorite part of Nguyen's art, so I think that is sort of lost here. Finally, if you're asking yourself why this 4-5 star sounding review is actually 3.5 stars, here's why: I don't like vampires. I don't generally find the appeal of vampires, I don't care for gore which this is honestly somewhat mild, considering. I read this for the creative team and they rock it as usual, but it isn't really enough to get me into the vampire genre. I will honestly still probably check out the next TP but I am glad I didn't pull this when it came out. If you like vampires, this will likely rock your world. I'd say I recommend it to anyone as it might be the tipping point for the genre for you, even if it wasn't for me.
