DC K.O. is the current event being published by DC Comics. The general idea is that Darkseid created an alternate universe in his image when he died during the DC All-In Special, now Darkseid and the Heart of Apokolips are trying to turn Earth-0 into a New Apokolips. This has been confirmed by Time Trapper, Booster Gold, and the World Forger, who also noted that there are no outcomes where Darkseid doesn't succeed. However, if someone should obtain the Omega energy from the Heart of Apokolips, they could become powerful enough to defeat Darkseid. In order to defend itself, the Heart of Apokolips creates a tournament, where the participants are rewarded for acting as Darkseid would, thus ensuring a worthy recipient of the Omega energy at the end.
There are more bits and pieces to unpack but that's the basic idea behind the event - and I'm loving it.
The idea that these heroes have to navigate something so unnatural to them (acting as Darkseid would) is a unique idea. I refuse to believe that the winner will be a hero that conceded to acting like Darkseid, but Superman is certainly acting more brutal than he usually does. There's a great rivalry between Supes and Lex that feels like a classic. I was slightly worried that with the name of the event that this would be pure action with no substance but I think Scott Snyder and Josh Williamson are saying a lot with this.
I feel like a true message to be found here is being uncompromising in a world where your values are under attack; and even if you falter in this pursuit, you can find your way back to the light.
