Ok this was way better than I had anticipated.
This was described as the start of a new story arc (volume 1 runs from issues 1 to 4) and while there was certainly some context I needed, I was able to pick it up and run with it to a certain extent. Grendrid is the big baddie, from the sounds of it and it seems like Briar Rose is fighting some inner demons, associated with the aforementioned big bad.
This book was funny. I mean it has that swashbuckling, adventure feel to it but these characters we're funny and in funny situations. I hope that when I go back and read Vol. 1 (out May 24th), that I can see some of the same humor.
Cantwell writes good dialogue, I enjoyed reading the book, and it seems like the overall story is quite compelling as well. Also, did I mention it's hilarious? To me, it's no easy feat to make a book a legitimate adventure AND funny.
The art by Alex Lins was fantastic. I definitely got a Jorge Corona vibe, which I liked a lot. It was all very dynamic and action packed.
The letters were good, but nothing that blew me out of the water.
Overall, check this out if you get the chance!!
